Real Foods

Over the past couple of months I have been experimenting with  what my bush hippy friends call "Real Foods", things like Chia seeds, organic dried fruits and meats, nuts, grains, wild edibles etc. as opposed to highly processed foods like MREs, canned goods and commercial jerked meats.

I have to admit that I do feel much better on "Real Foods" and have lost a considerable amount of weight. Im still hiking as much as I ever did with my heavy pack, and staying out as long in the mountains as normal (for me), But only consuming this "Real Foods" diet.

On my last trip to the woods I carried some Korean style acorn powder, it was a pretty tasty addition to my meals but , what I didnt like is that it has to be cooked - to cook out the starch- and is a bit bitter, It appears that our Korean friends don't leech out the tannin from the acorns; ( http://aeriskitchen.com/2008/05/acorn-starch-jelly-powder-dotorimuk/). I also had on this last trip some pepperoni, Spirulina plankton, ginger, 2 limes, a few Brussel sprouts and some Olive oil.

My normal modus when in the field is to eat a handful of seeds - chia, Peruvian Salba, pumpkin, sesame, sunflower - Followed by a hand full of dried fruit - cranberries or raisins, figs or dates. Followed by some dried meat - either wild meat like Elk, Deer, Bear , squirrels, rabbit woodchuck etc., organic beef or Fresh made Mexican chicharonnes., topped off with a hand full of organic grains of some type like dried rice cakes, pop corn, etc. All washed down with Kambucha , green tea, or Mate', or just plain water from my favorite spring.

Believe it or not, I have lost my taste for things like bread and beer, chocolate or anything sweet - with the exception of dried fruits and crystallized ginger. And after consuming Mate' and green tea - or Kambucha, for several months, I have lost my taste for coffee. I do occasionally drink a cup of "Joe" that my friend Matt brews up.

My plan is to continue this non/low carb "Paleo" diet for the foreseeable future and see where it leads.

Tomahawk Drawings

Over the past 30 years or so I have been making drawings or what I call "Doodles", mostly when traveling, riding out a stretch of bad weather in my tent of shelter, or simply out of extreme boredom. I have found this type of drawing to be a type of meditaion for me. Not only do I create a unique illustration but it helps me think clearly and solve equations or logistical problems in my head before I attack them first hand.

I have given the majority of these drawings away but have managed to retain a few over the past coupla years. Ill have to ask my friend Jager in Montana, I believe he may have retained a few from back in the 90s.

Anyhoo, here are the ones I was able to find. I feel as do most of my friends - that these illustrations demonstrate the complex workings from the inside Tomahawks skull. I tend to put a lot of the same things in each drawing, just in different configurations.

I hope you like them.

Tomahawk / Whisky Jack - 4 years on the road

Ok, so, as of Aug 9th I have been bumming around the USA and various parts of the world for 4 years. Mainly without a job or much money. I think last year I might have cleared 7k or so for living expenses etc.

It has been a great experience and I hope to continue this type of lifestyle for a long time to come. In the future though, I would prefer to live and remain in SE Asia. Why? I just like it better there and feel more at home.

Anyhoo, over the past year (since last August), I have been in Maine, I left there to Hitch Hike back to Arizona(it took 16 days); I lived in te Dragoon and Huachuca mountains until I left for a temp gig in Afghanistan, from there I went to Kuwait and Dubai, on to Sri Lanka, then Thailand, and finally Cebu in the Philippines before returning to Arizona. I stayed in Az for a few week before boarding a train to Texas where I met up with Tim Smith and cousin Cletus of the Jack Mountain Bushcraft school (www.jackmtn.com), then we drove to Masardis Maine. In Maine I went on the 28 day Canoe expedition with JMB as an Instructor and official whiskey taster.

From Maine, I flew to Colorado - via Boston, to participate in a TV shoot for animal planet. I met some good folks on the shoot and made some lasting friend there. After the Shoot, I came "home" to Arizona and camped in the local mountains for 2 weeks then flew up to Jackson's hole,Wyoming. From JH, I hitch hiked over to Tetonia , Idaho to meet up with Tim Smith and Cousin Cletus to attend the 1st ever Woodsmoke gathering.

From Tetonia, I hitch hiked up to Montana(1 ride, 1 day) where I camped for 2 weeks, then I shouldered my pack and Hitch Hiked back to Arizona(it took 7 days), Where I currently am.

I will remain here until around the 9th of September. I have been selected for a new Survival based TV show on Animal Planet, Im curious to see where that leads.

Like I said earlier, It has been a great experience, and I love the travel and the chance to meet new intelligent, like minded people.

Here are a few pics from the road over the summer. I could only find one from Thailand and None from Cebu, that might be because I was drunk most of the time in those 2 places.

See you on the trail.
