I have gotten a lot of emails lately asking me what type of survival kit I carry into the woods. Well, I dont really carry one. What I prefer to do is carry multi purpose gear, or gear that I think is appropriate for a given area. In SE Arizona, in the Huachuca mountains, I was camping/hiking at around 6 to 9000 feet so I carried very little. Breaking my plunder down into 4 catagories;1. shelter 2. water 3. fire 4. food.
Take a look at this short vid and you will get a good idea of what i had with me.
While doing a bit of dumpster diving while on my way up to the mountains, I found the contents of a medicle bag which some knuckle head army kid threw away. why? who knows.
I immediatly thought about making a sling shot when i saw the tubular rubber tourniquets amongst my new plunder.
Taking some of the inner strings from a piece of 550 and some leather from a discarded army glove, I was able to make a fairly strong survival tool . Using piece of manzanita wood for the fork.
I will pack this new toy as part of my over seas gear too.
Huachuca peak is the 4th highest peak in the huachuca range. At well over 8000 feet it is a pretty good hike/climb when you begin at the 5200 base of it. The hike to the top took me 5 1/2 hours to reach the peak, my decent took only 2 or so. I decided to return via mclure canyon which is steeper but a lot shorter in distance. It was a good hike and I was glad to return to camp , eat some grub , then hit the sack. Tomahawk - Scouts out!
My good griend "Cyber slinger" was very generous to give me a hennessy hammock, I have been using it as a secondary shelter and for taking naps in the afternoon. There were a few night that I slept in the hammock without a pad, and froze my ass off, the temps at night were getting down to around 45F or so. Ill be packing the hennessy with me on my next over seas adventure in june. Tomahawk - Scouts out!
A couple folks sent me emails asking me to post another vid about making friction fire by the Bow and drill method. The materials that I used were literally found within arms reachof my camp.
I did not blow it into a flame beacuse of the extreme fire danger in the Huachucas at present.
I had gotten a little tired of foraging for wild edibles so, I decended to one of my lower camps where I had a cache of MRE meal and other packaged foods. For the bag/container I used a pack discarded by some illigal alien who threw it down along the trail. I repaired it with the flap from my stuff sack and sewing kit.
The plastic wrap was also another Illigal alien discard. Those idiots really have no respect for nature, the USA and common decency.
OK folks, this is a short vid of my 1st update after my failure to hitch hike out of Arizona. i subsequently spent 3 weeks hiking and camping in the Huachuca mountains.
I was lucky enough to score a large box of assorted MRE main meal, parts and some fresh apples. it was a good haul for about 10 mins work.
